Every DEX assumes you already know what impermanent loss is. Baby Swap doesn't. It's a design concept for DeFi for absolute beginners. Also, unapologetically, the cutest DEX in the world.
The challenge
Multiple people kept asking me the same question: "what are the challenges new users face in DeFi?" The honest answer is jargon and fear. Liquidity pools, impermanent loss, slippage tolerance, LP tokens, transaction fees: I've watched experienced crypto users (myself included) hesitate because they couldn't confidently explain what they were about to sign.
Most DEXs compound this with futuristic neon interfaces that read as "you don't belong here" to a first-timer.
Two moves against intimidation
- A playful, welcoming theme. Nothing wrong with cyber-neon; it's just intimidating when every term on screen is already new. Cute graphics and plain language lower the heart rate before the first swap.
- Inline education, exactly where the concept appears. Every screen carries a guide to the key terms visible on that screen, written for beginners. Not a docs site. Not a modal. Right below the swap form, where the anxiety lives.
Screen by screen
Landing
Users are welcomed with a simple explanation of what the platform does, key metrics with descriptions of what they mean, a plain-language list of what you can do here, and social proof via partners. Emphasis on "absolute beginners". The promise is comfort.
Swaps
The swap interface deliberately mirrors the widely-used pattern every tutorial shows, because familiarity is a feature. But the data under the form (LP fees and friends) is restructured for readability, your assets stay visible in a side panel for reassurance, and the screen's key terms are explained directly below.
Liquidity pools
Same pattern, higher stakes: key terms, what they mean, and what the risks are. Especially impermanent loss, the concept that separates people who provide liquidity from people who get surprised by it. Users who want depth graduate to the "Baby Academy."
Staking
Staking with no minimum amount or duration: a deliberate simplification (justified in-world by a very high token supply) that lets new users play with the mechanism before committing.
What this project is
I made Baby Swap to understand DeFi more deeply myself, to practice a welcoming UX voice in a space that mostly refuses to have one, and to sharpen visual design skills. It's the clearest expression of a belief that runs through my work: the interface is the education.
